GATE 2027 Physics Syllabus Change — Everything New, Explained
Published by PhysicsByAaryan · Last updated for GATE 2027 · Source: official GATE 2027 portal (IIT Madras)
IIT Madras, the organising institute for GATE 2027, has released the revised syllabus for the Physics (PH) paper. The new syllabus is now organised into 11 sections instead of the earlier 10, with a brand-new Section 1 and a dedicated Section for Optical Physics. This is the single most important change GATE 2027 aspirants need to know about.
What has changed in GATE 2027 Physics (PH) syllabus?
- New Section 1 — Measurements and Error Analysis: An entirely new section covering units & dimensions, significant figures, error analysis, 2-probe and 4-probe methods for resistance measurement, grounding & ground loops, DC power supply design, and signal processing through lock-in amplifiers.
- New stand-alone Section 6 — Optical Physics: Optics content (interference, diffraction, polarization, lasers, ray-transfer matrices) has been carved out into its own section instead of being clubbed under Electromagnetic Theory.
- Total sections increased from 10 → 11 (in addition to the common General Aptitude section).

Why this matters for your GATE 2027 prep
The addition of Measurements & Error Analysis means that experimental physics topics — earlier considered "extra" — are now formally examinable. Expect direct 1- and 2-mark questions on error propagation, 4-probe measurements and lock-in amplifiers. The separation of Optical Physics signals that the paper-setters at IIT Madras want more explicit coverage of Jones matrices, Fabry–Perot etalon, Fresnel/Fraunhofer diffraction and laser physics.
Everything else — Quantum Mechanics, EMT, Classical, Solid State, Mathematical Physics — remains the highest-weight territory. Practise with our GATE Physics PYQ library (2012–2026) and track subject weightage on the Analytics page.
